The Long and Winding Road to the WSET Diploma

As regular readers of my wine blog will recall, I posted back in November 2020 about sitting my (hopefully) last exam in the Level 4 Diploma course with the UK-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust. I had to resit the Sparkling Wines unit, having passed the blind tasting portion but not the theory portion of the exam first time round. As I wrote back then:

“I won’t know for several more weeks whether my long and winding journey is over and I have finally achieved the WSET Diploma award. I am cautiously optimistic, although you never know… Either way, when I finally do get my results I am quite likely to pop the cork on yet another bottle of Champagne, but this time to drink deeply and swallow!”

Well, I just learned that I passed that final exam! Which is, not to put too fine a point on it, a huge relief and cause for great excitement and pride all round: it means that, in due course, I will officially graduate with the globally recognized DiplWSET, one of the wine world’s most challenging, coveted and respected wine education qualifications.

So, as I predicted back in that earlier post, tonight we will pop the cork on a special bottle of sparkling wine and raise a toast to this milestone, after what has been an incredible journey on a long and winding road of discovery, deep learning, excitement and sometime disillusionment, and ultimate success.

To any of you reading this who are similarly embarked on the WSET qualifications journey (or are thinking about doing it), I wish you all the best in your endeavours, and good luck. Cheers!
